At Canyon-Lister school we are passionate about outdoor education. We are extremely fortunate to have our very own forest right in our school yard. This 2.5 acre green space is fenced on all sides, and students have the opportunity to explore and play in the forest. Students are able to access the forest for free play during recess times and classes explore this area in a variety of educational ways throughout the day. We also have a full size tipi which can accommodate a whole class. In this year’s school growth plan teachers have made a goal to be outside at least 2.5 hours per week.
Research has shown that children and young people are stimulated by the outdoors and typically experience, over time, an increase in their confidence, learning capacity, enthusiasm, communication and problem-solving skills. Outdoor education also increases student engagement, decreases stress, and builds community.
