Rocking and Learning: A Grade 5-7 STEM Challenge with Found Materials
This week, the students in Mme Victoria's French Immersion (Grades 5-7) class weren't just learning about science and math – they were putting those skills to the test with a rocking chair building challenge! But here's the twist: they could only use recycled and found materials. Cardboard boxes, milk jugs, plastic buckets – you name it, the students used it! The challenge was to design and build a rocking chair that was both sturdy and could pass the ‘rocking’ test. It sparked a frenzy of creativity in the classroom. Once the rocking chairs were built, it was time for the ultimate test: would they rock? Some chairs needed a few tweaks – adding extra support beams here, adjusting the rocking angle there. But in the end, every group had a functioning (and sometimes surprisingly stylish) rocking chair!
